Uncomplicated Wealth Building for Beginners: I just need the main ideas....don't have time!

Summary of First Few Steps to Wealth Building

  1. High interest rate savings account filled up with emergency fund: If you have no high interest rate debts (interest rate >7%), then park 6 months worth of your living expenses in a high interest rate savings account for unexpected expenses. Use bankrate.com to look for banks offering the best rates. Start with the best you can do, and then try to increase slowly but steadily to reach that 6-8 months worth of expenses.
  2. 401K contributions up to company match:  If you work in a company that offers a match on your 401K retirement contributions, contribute at least up to the company match limit. Also make sure the 401K money is being invested in low expense ratio growth mutual funds.
These two steps in themselves will give a strong foundation to wealth building.

Let us next jump into what to do next if we have additional money available as savings.
